I don't understand why people have always hated on the California. Yes, it's not a supercar like the 458 but it isn't trying to be. In fact if I had to cross the US in a sports car it would be a California. *drops mic*

P.S. Shoutout to all the peopke that have been around long enough to remember when my name was "Alex, the only person on Jalopnik that likes the Ferrari California".

The California is Ferrari's "cash cow," which they use to fund the bigger projects like the F12 and the TheFerrari.

I like the California more than the 458/ La Ferrari/ F12. Grand tourers are the best sports cars.

I think the reason people hated the old one was because of its huge butt. Then huge buts got...ahem...big in the US just in time for Ferrari to redesign in. My beef is that I don't care about it. its not that its not a nice car, its just doesn't excite me at all. Then again most modern supercars or Ferrari in general don't. The original California was all about sounding good and looking better...Old so cal stuff...the new ones are about zero substance and status...very new so cal.

It's a turbo v8 similar to that in the new 488, hence the boost in power over the old California.

I agree wholeheartedly with you. I even have a poster of it on my wall.

But what's the point of a California when you can get a /supercharged/ (not turbo'd) F-Type for significantly less?

It seems to me sometimes that any expensive sports car that is not hardcore or crazy or raw enough is simply dismissed as a plaything for rich posers. Especially convertibles. Cars like the Mercedes SL, Bentley GTC, Maserati GTC, Porsche 911 Cabriolet, California, and even the Jaguar XK convertible. It irritates me no end.

I sorta forgot the 488 existed.

I like the facelift compared to the pre-T California.

A black roof and black windshield frame, on that blue car, with a black interior with those saddle brown seats with daytona inserts (thin black stripes in the seat upholstery) and some nice looking wheels (BBS Challenge-style, perhaps)

Kinja'd!!!

That could be quite a handsome car. No 550/575M but a handsome car, as front-engined Ferraris go.

The knocks against the original California are:

1. Slightly underpowered for a Ferrari.

2. More GT than sports car, when Ferrari is known for sports cars, and there are plenty of faster sports cars available for the money (or less).

3. Only available as a hardtop convertible—again contributing to the not-a-sports-car image.

4. A bit odd looking.

So basically, it was the "cheap" Ferrari, not a hardcore performance car, not particularly better than cheaper competitors, and not particularly attractive, it developed the image of being the Ferrari for brand whores who couldn't quite otherwise afford a Ferrari. Like, might as well have just bought a Maserati, but really wanted to say they have a Ferrari.

Except it's still a 6-figure car with a Ferrari badge and really, anything that costs 6 figures and has a Ferrari badge is probably being bought by brand whores. But at least those other Ferraris are also performance-y, or something.

The California T is a lot faster and better looking but it has the stigma created by the original to overcome.

Congratulations.

You have presented an open and shut case.

The new California is nice... but the F-type is gorgeous.

Also, the F-Type R is quite a compelling alternative to the Ferrari, which is saying something significant at such a lower price, as you mentioned.

There are plenty of logical arguments for other cars. However, if I woke up one morning and the California was parked in my garage I would do things in this order. 1.)pinch myself 2.)wet myself 3.) clean myself up 4.) spend the day driving the shit out of it.
